Finance Requirements

The worldwide finance requirements of SOS Children’s Villages can be roughly divided into the essential categories of financing of construction and financing of maintenance.

Costs can vary greatly between continents and countries; these costs are always dependent on the general price levels and the respective local availability of goods.

Maintenance Financing

The maintenance involves the operating costs for a SOS Children’s Village.  The primary necessities are the housekeeping budgets of SOS families and the other expenses that are connected to normal life in a SOS Children’s Village.

Maintenance of SOS Children’s Villages is financed by general donations.  However, there is also the opportunity to make a specific donation for a designated SOS Children’s Village or for a designated country.  Furthermore, village sponsorships or child sponsorships contribute to maintenance financing.

There is a direct link between operating costs and the financing of our program work; thus, these operating costs account for a sizable portion of the overall SOS finance requirements.

Construction Financing

Construction projects can comprise either refurbishment projects or new construction work.
  • Currently, there is an increasing need for renovations, as many SOS Children’s Villages were built in the 1980s and the facilities have worn over the years.  The costs for refurbishment vary depending on the scope of repairs necessary and the price structure in a given country.  The funds necessary for a refurbishment can range from some tens of thousands of euros to more than one million euros.
  • The construction of new facilities occurs only when there is definite need for such, and if the upkeep expenses (maintenance costs) are secured.

    • Houses in a SOS Children’s Village can cost between 50,000 and 250,000 euros.
    • A new SOS Children’s Village costs between one and four million euros.
    • Building a school costs between 500,000 euros and two million euros.
